Liam Shortall’s Corto.Alto has rapidly emerged as a prominent name in Glasgow’s revitalized jazz scene. Despite Shortall's impressive reputation, it’s surprising that "Bad With Names" is his debut album, with the excellent EP "Not For Now" from 2021 being the only other significant release to date. This debut album marks a major milestone for a project that has captivated audiences and collaborated with nearly every notable musician in the city.

This eclectic approach is evident in the album's sound, which bridges the gap between traditional jazz and the experimental edge of modern music.

The album's tracks exhibit Shortall’s unique style, with a notable affinity for unconventional soundscapes. For instance, “Latency” is marked by a shimmering drum and bass beat from Graham Costello, combined with intriguing sound manipulations that blur the lines between trumpet and synth. Similarly, “Mechanisms” oscillates between smooth jazz vibes and explosive, overdriven guitar and strings, evoking the adrenaline rush of early Mogwai albums.

The album opens with the engaging track “Hello” and concludes with “Bye,” creating a cyclical feel that invites listeners to experience the album repeatedly. Shortall’s innovative approach, blending influences from DJ Shadow to Trombone Shorty, results in a fresh and exciting take on jazz that challenges traditional boundaries.

Shortall has hinted that “Bad With Names” might mark the end of the Corto.Alto project. If this is indeed the case, it serves as a remarkable conclusion to a pioneering endeavour. The album stands as a testament to Shortall’s creativity and the vibrant potential of Glasgow’s jazz scene, leaving a lasting impression on its listeners.

In conclusion, Corto.Alto’s "Bad With Names" is more than just an album—it’s a bold and inventive exploration of jazz and beyond. With its blend of traditional and contemporary influences, it showcases Liam Shortall’s exceptional talent and vision, offering a memorable listening experience that pushes the boundaries of the genre.
