Corinne Bailey Rae has long been associated with soothing, coffee-shop tunes like “Put Your Records On” and “Like a Star.” However, her latest album, Black Rainbows, is a dramatic departure from her usual fare, making a powerful statement with its audacious blend of rock, jazz, electronica, and Afrofuturism. Originally conceived as a side project inspired by the Stony Island Arts Bank archive in Chicago, this record has evolved into what many consider her finest work to date.

Clocking in at just 45 minutes, Black Rainbows weaves an epic narrative of freedom and transformation. The album opens with two tracks that, while intriguing, might initially feel like a slow burn. However, the real magic begins as Rae delves into post-punk and experimental territory. Her voice, often distorted and charged with a raw energy, fuels a cathartic exploration of new sonic landscapes.

One of the standout tracks, “He Will Follow You With His Eyes,” showcases Rae’s versatility. The song begins as a jazzy, flirtatious piece but gradually morphs into a wild, magical exploration, marked by Rae’s stark vocal delivery as she sings lines like “my black hair kinking, my black skin gleaming.” This transformation reflects the album’s overarching theme of metamorphosis.

The closing track, “Before the Throne of the Invisible God,” is perhaps the most striking. Rae channels a sonic landscape reminiscent of Alice Coltrane, blending spiritual and avant-garde elements to create a powerful conclusion to the album. It’s a testament to her ability to reinvent herself and her music.

While Black Rainbows may not be perfect, its ambitious fusion of genres and its exploration of profound themes make it an extraordinary and compelling listen. Corinne Bailey Rae’s bold leap into new musical territories has resulted in a record that is both innovative and deeply resonant, marking a significant evolution in her artistic journey.
