CMAT’s sophomore album, Crazymad, For Me, delivers a deeply personal and energetically captivating experience that stands proudly among her country-pop predecessors. Her charisma and unadulterated passion shine through every track, making it clear that CMAT is much more than three chords and the truth.
The album feels like a diary put to music, with CMAT sharing tales of broken hearts, identity crises, and loneliness. There's a sense that these songs were meant to be heard, drawing listeners into her world. Crazymad, For Me builds on the impressive debut If My Wife Knew, I’d Be Dead, with CMAT’s humour and musical literacy taking her into a new era. The cinematic opener “California” sets the tone for an album that’s bigger and better, showcasing her evolution as an artist.
The twin track to “Nashville” from her previous album, “California” offers another place of refuge. “Can’t Make Up My Mind” and “Phone Me” are sleek and addictive listens, with production that feels just right. “I…Hate Who I Am When I’m Horny” hints at the direction CMAT might go next, blending influences from Tori Amos to Florence + the Machine and Lily Allen.
CMAT’s country roots shine through on “Torn Apart,” a grandiose track with slide guitar and harp sounds that could easily be the soundtrack to a modern cowboy film. Pop culture references are woven throughout, from Gilmore Girls to Sex and the City, creating a hall of fame that accompanies her as she grows.
Classifying any one track as a highlight would be a disservice to Crazymad, For Me. Each song is a sparkling jewel in CMAT’s crown. However, “Rent” stands out with heartbreaking passion, building from a solo guitar to a country-tinged ballad. The raw emotion in CMAT’s voice is reminiscent of Tina Turner, delivering a powerful crescendo that leaves a lasting impact.
Crazy Mad, For Me, is a testament to CMAT’s ability to blend rage, reflection, and retribution into a cohesive and impactful album. Back-to-back bangers make it clear that when CMAT preaches her gospel, it’s for good reason. This album will stand the test of time, showcasing her growth and establishing her place in the music world.
