In a stunning display of endurance and determination, Keely Hodgkinson clinched the gold medal in the women’s 800m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. As the final bend approached, Hodgkinson, 22, from Wigan, faced down fierce competitors with a fearless surge that electrified the Stade de France. With a dramatic finish, she secured her place atop the podium, turning past near-misses into a glorious victory.

Hodgkinson celebrates winning gold in the women’s 800m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with tears of joy and the British flag in hand.

Hodgkinson’s win was a moment of redemption. After returning from Tokyo 2021 and subsequent World Championships with three silver medals, expectations were high.

The race saw Hodgkinson maintaining a steady lead from 300m, clocking halfway in 58.30 seconds. Despite stiff competition from world champion Mary Moraa, world indoor champion Tsige Duguma, and Shafiqua Maloney, Hodgkinson unleashed a final burst of speed, finishing in 1:56.72. Duguma took silver with 1:57.15, and Moraa secured bronze.

Hodgkinson’s victory makes her the third British woman to win Olympic 800m gold, following Ann Packer in 1964 and Kelly Holmes in 2004. Her journey began with a young Hodgkinson inspired by Jessica Ennis-Hill’s London 2012 triumph. Transitioning from swimming to running, Hodgkinson overcame significant challenges, including a tumour that left her partially deaf, to achieve this remarkable feat.

Hodgkinson’s gold medal not only signifies personal success but also highlights her potential for future greatness. Her coach, Trevor Painter, describes her as a bubbly, free-spirited athlete who stands out for her unique style and approach.

At the Team GB training camp in Paris, Hodgkinson’s style was evident as she sported Chanel sunglasses and her favourite Louis Vuitton handbag, adding to her distinctive presence. Just as she did with her competitors, Hodgkinson embraced her individuality and delivered a performance that will resonate for years.
