Great Britain’s Jack Laugher and Anthony Harding delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s synchronized 3m springboard diving event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, earning a bronze medal. The result adds a prestigious Olympic medal to their impressive collection, which already includes European, Commonwealth, and world championships.
The British pair, who began their partnership in late 2021, showcased remarkable skill and determination throughout the competition. Despite a challenging start, Laugher and Harding saved their most difficult dives for the final rounds, maintaining their position in the medal hunt. Their final two dives were executed with precision, securing their place on the podium.
Laugher and Harding’s bronze medal performance came after a thrilling contest with strong competitors. China's Wang Zongyuan and Long Daoyi, the event’s gold medalists, overcame an early wobble to top the standings with 446.10 points. Mexico’s Juan Celaya and Osmar Olvera claimed the silver with a score of 444.03. Laugher and Harding finished with 438.15 points, ensuring their third-place position.
After their final dive, Laugher and Harding embraced in celebration, while their teammates and supporters erupted in cheers. It was a significant moment for Laugher, who now has a fourth Olympic medal to his name, following his gold and silver from Rio 2016 and bronze from Tokyo 2021. For Harding, this was his first Olympic medal, marking a milestone in his diving career.
Laugher has previously spoken about the mental challenges he faced after the 2019 World Championships, where a poor final dive dropped him from first to third place. The experience nearly led him to quit diving. However, his success in Tokyo 2021 reignited his passion for the sport, and his new partnership with Harding has quickly proved fruitful.
The British divers maintained their place in the top three throughout the event, being second at the halfway stage and continuing to challenge the leading teams. Their performance was marked by a crucial 3.9 difficulty dive in the penultimate round, which kept them in contention.
This bronze medal is a significant achievement for British diving, contributing to Britain’s impressive tally of four diving medals at the Paris Games. Earlier in the competition, Tom Daley and Noah Williams won silver in the men’s synchronized 10m platform, while Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew-Jensen, and Lois Toulson and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix secured bronzes in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard and 10m platform events, respectively.
Laugher is also set to compete in the individual 3m springboard event later in the week, with heats scheduled to start on August 6. The ongoing success of British divers highlights the strength and depth of the team on the global stage.
Jack Laugher and Anthony Harding’s bronze medal in the men’s synchronized 3m springboard at Paris 2024 underscores their skill and dedication. Their achievement adds to the already impressive performance of British divers at the Games, reflecting a strong start for Team GB in the sport. As Laugher prepares for the individual competition, the duo’s success continues to inspire and elevate British diving.
