Great Britain's women’s 4x400m relay team delivered a remarkable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, securing a bronze medal in a nail-biting final. The team, featuring Victoria Ohuruogu, Laviai Nielsen, Nicole Yeargin, and Amber Anning, showcased extraordinary teamwork and perseverance.
The final was a display of high-calibre athletics, with Team GB competing against the world’s best. Starting in lane seven, Ohuruogu handed over in fourth place behind the USA, France, and Jamaica. Despite Jamaica's baton drop due to a minor collision with an Irish athlete, the U.S. maintained a commanding lead, finishing 4.23 seconds ahead of the field.
The Dutch and Great Britain were involved in a fierce battle for the remaining medals. With all top five teams breaking national records, the competition was intense. Amber Anning faced a formidable challenge from Femke Bol of the Netherlands, who had already won gold in the mixed 4x400m relay and a bronze in the 400m hurdles. Bol edged Anning to secure silver, marking her third medal of the week.
Ireland’s women’s 4x400m relay team finished agonizingly close to the podium, coming in fourth place, just 0.18 and 0.40 seconds behind the bronze and silver medalists, respectively. The Irish team, comprising Sophie Becker, Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy, and Sharlene Mawdsley, set a new national record, taking nearly three seconds off their previous best.
For Team GB, this bronze medal is their 10th athletics medal at Paris 2024, adding to their tally of five bronzes, four silvers, and Keely Hodgkinson’s gold. The race showcased the depth and skill of British athletics, with all top teams delivering record-breaking performances.
The team’s inspiring performance in Paris continues to resonate with fans and aspiring athletes across the UK, further cementing their place in British athletics history.
