Bryony Page has made history by winning Great Britain’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in trampoline gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 33-year-old athlete's commanding performance earned her a score of 56.480 points, securing a significant victory in a tightly contested final.
Page, who won silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020, finally secured the gold medal she had longed for. Her triumph in Paris not only completes her collection of Olympic medals but also sets a historic milestone for British gymnastics. Her journey from silver and bronze to the ultimate gold showcases her remarkable career and dedication to the sport.
In the final at Bercy Arena, Page displayed a high level of difficulty and precision in her routine. Despite initial nervousness and a brief moment of premature celebration, Page’s performance was flawless, and she secured her victory after the final gymnast, Hu Yicheng of China, faltered.
Page’s gold medal win was a moment of disbelief and joy. “It sounds amazing,” Page said. “I had quite a difficult build-up, anticipating this competition for a long time.” She had been dealing with an ankle injury and experienced a neck issue during podium training, but these challenges did not deter her from achieving her goal.
The final results saw Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya of the Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) team take silver and Canada’s Sophiane Methot win bronze. Bardzilouskaya’s silver medal is notable as it was the first medal won by an AIN athlete at the Paris Games. However, the International Olympic Committee will not include AIN medals in the official medal table.
Bryony Page’s path to gold has been fraught with challenges. She has previously battled mental blocks and injuries that threatened her career. Despite these obstacles, Page’s resilience and love for the sport have driven her success. Her journey back from a mental block and injury struggles is a testament to her perseverance and dedication.
Page’s aspirations extend beyond Olympic success. She dreams of joining Cirque du Soleil after her competitive trampolining career. “My plan is to continue trampolining and achieve more personal goals,” Page explained. “Then maybe Cirque du Soleil if they still want me. I might also consider a comeback for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.”
Bryony Page’s gold medal win at the Paris 2024 Olympics is a historic achievement for Great Britain and trampoline gymnastics. Her victory reflects her exceptional talent, hard work, and ability to overcome significant challenges. As she looks forward to new endeavours, Page’s accomplishment will remain a proud moment in British sports history.
