Great Britain clinched the Olympic triathlon mixed team relay bronze after initially being announced as silver medallists, following a nail-biting photo finish on an electrifying morning in Paris.

Beth Potter, Georgia Taylor-Brown, and Alex Yee celebrate their bronze medal in the triathlon mixed relay at Paris 2024.

The British quartet of Alex Yee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Samuel Dickinson, and Beth Potter fiercely contended with Germany and the United States throughout the race. They held a five-second lead going into the final stage, but Potter was caught on the cycle leg by Germany's Laura Lindemann and American Taylor Knibb.

Cheered on by the British team down the iconic Pont Alexandre III, Potter could not match Lindemann's final burst. However, she and Knibb crossed the line almost simultaneously. Initially, Britain was declared silver medallists, but a review by race officials confirmed just before the medal ceremony that the United States had finished second, with Britain securing bronze. Both Britain and the United States clocked the same time of one hour 25.40 minutes, just one second behind the champions, Germany.

British Triathlon Performance Director Mike Cavendish acknowledged the decision, stating they would not appeal against the result. "I've seen the photo—when you zoom in, it's relatively clear," he told BBC TV.

As defending champions, Great Britain faced intense pressure in this event, where each athlete completed a 300m swim, 7km cycle, and 1.8km run. Concerns over poor water quality in the Seine, which had been a recurring issue throughout the Games, threatened to delay the event. However, the race proceeded as planned on Monday morning, despite requests for more preparation time after the familiarisation swims were cancelled.

On a stunning morning, Yee gave Britain a superb start, roared on by the packed crowds lining the bridges and Parisian streets. His excellent bike leg and trademark strong sprint put Britain in an early lead. Taylor-Brown maintained this momentum with an outstanding bike performance, but she was caught at the line by Germany's Lisa Tertsch, trailing by one second into the third leg.

Lasse Luehrs kept the pressure on, running right on the heels of Britain's Dickinson on the final stretch. Dickinson withstood the pressure and tagged in Potter with a lead. The thrilling finish saw Potter, Lindemann, and Knibb jostling for the top spot. The trio sprinted for the finish line, with Potter and Knibb barely separated in the photo finish.

Despite the initial disappointment of missing out on silver, Team GB will leave Paris with a medal in every triathlon event, showcasing their strength and depth in the sport.
