Potter claimed bronze behind French winner Cassandre Beaugrand and Switzerland’s Julie Derron, adding to the impressive medal collection of the training group in Leeds, which includes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee. Potter, who house-shared with Jonny Brownlee for almost a year, has been greatly influenced by the Brownlee brothers, who are both absent from the Olympic triathlon race for the first time in 20 years but remain part of her coaching team.
“They’re always the first to message me before and after races - they believe in me and have been a massive part of my journey,” said Potter. Alistair Brownlee, the men’s champion in 2012 and 2016, praised Potter’s performance, saying, “I know she wanted to win that gold medal but I hope she is not disappointed - it was an amazing, super-tough race and you could see she was giving everything. It’s amazing how far she’s come. She’s a really inspirational story.”
Emerging from the 1500m swim leg in fifth amid fierce currents, Potter joined a lead group of nine during the 40km cycle. Overnight rain had dampened the roads, and the course, which included cobbles around Paris landmarks, saw a series of crashes. Potter credited her ability to stay upright to her regular training on the wet roads of Leeds.
In the final 10km run, Beaugrand and Derron led the pace, with Potter and Emma Lombardi trailing. At the 8km mark, Beaugrand launched a decisive attack, securing gold, while Derron took silver, and a visibly exhausted Potter held on to claim bronze.
In addition to Potter’s bronze, Georgia Taylor-Brown finished sixth, returning from injury, and Team GB’s Kate Waugh finished 15th.
Potter's journey from the track to the triathlon podium is a testament to her determination and adaptability. Her bronze medal win at Paris 2024 is a remarkable achievement, highlighting her incredible progress and resilience.
