In a stunning display of endurance and sheer willpower, Alex Yee secured gold in the triathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics, delivering a performance that captivated spectators and ended with a thrilling twist. Having previously won silver at the Tokyo Games, Yee showed that he is now a leading figure in triathlon, overshadowing even the most seasoned competitors.
On a sweltering day in Paris, it appeared that New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde was on track to clinch the gold medal as he led the race into the final kilometre. However, Wilde’s pace faltered unexpectedly, creating an opportunity for Yee, known for his exceptional running abilities. Yee seized this moment with extraordinary speed, ultimately finishing in 1 hour, 43 minutes, and 33 seconds. Wilde took silver, and France’s Léo Bergère rounded out the podium in third place.
At the race’s outset, Yee emerged from the swim segment 27 seconds behind the leaders, with Wilde trailing by an additional 36 seconds. Despite this setback, Yee quickly caught up during the cycling portion, joining a lead group of 32. As the transition to the run began, Yee briefly held the lead before Wilde surged ahead, maintaining a 14-second advantage with 2.5 kilometres remaining.
